HISTORICAL CONNECTIONS
While best known for his epoch-making role laying the first trans-Atlantic submarine telegraph cable between Valentia Island, Co. Kerry and Newfoundland, Canada in 1866, Captain Robert Halpin continued his illustrious with many further projects, including his completion of the Newcastle-Nefyn cable in the 1880s. Today, he is recognised as one a handful of pioneering 19th Century inventors, mariners and engineers whose work brought about a communications revolution that ushered in the modern age. LOCATION
The site enjoys an outstanding coastal settting overlooking Newcastle Beach to the east, and bounded by Birdwatch Ireland’s East Coast nature reserve immediately to the west. It commands panoramic views of Wicklow Head to the south and the Sugarloaf Mountain and rolling Wicklow countryside to the west. It’s a short drive from from Newcastle village and (heading north through Kilcoole) only a few minutes from the R774 link road, providing speedy access to Greystones and the N11/M50. Newcastle is a much sought-after and affluent area of North Wicklow, where the lack of large-scale developments has helped it retain its village feel while still providing a wide range of local amenities. Greystones DART Station is only ten minutes drive away, putting this location within easy commuting distance of the capital.
