Brief history of Shamrock Cottage

As stated in the home s deeds and original plans Shamrock Cottage was built by the home s first owner James Price engineer.

Price was also responsible for the realigning of the Bray/Greystones railway in the 1880 s. I.K. Brunel had previously built a spectacular coastal railway line round Bray Head in County Wicklow, but unfortunately not enough attention was paid to the geology of the area, and several disastrous landslides resulted. James Price was given the job of sorting it out and move inland the affected stretch of railway which is still in use today. Described as a genius for his engineering work by the Irish Times in 1873, Price was also offered a knighthood which he declined on a matter of principle. He was a member of the General Synod of the Church of Ireland, worshiped in St. Patrick s Church across the road from his home and is described in his obituary as a man of large-hearted sympathy who gave much time and energy to works of benevolence . James died in 1895 and was laid to rest in Redford Cemetery (The Grove) in his hometown of Greystones where a spectacular marble sculpture marks his family plot.
Following James passing and revealed in Shamrock Cottage s deeds, the property was then passed onto another historical figure Ivon Henry Price , Head of British Intelligence at Dublin Castle during the Easter Rising.
In 1922 the next owner- Senator Professor William Magennis , Magennis was the founding member of the political party Clann ireann . The party advocated the abolition of the Oath of Allegiance to the British King. He was nominated by the Taoiseach to the Seanad in 1938 and served as an independent member until his death in 1946......
In 2010 Shamrock Cottage was extended using traditional materials such as lime mortar and limestone combined with the best building materials available today.
