Property Description

"Ileclash is one of the jewels of the Blackwater Valley. On approximately 12 acres (4.9ha) It stands gracefully on an elevation and commands a fine view over the river and surrounding countryside. The demesne contains over two kilometres of river bank and a variety of terrains, ranging from terraced lawns to mature woodland, rockeries to caves and lily-ponds to newly planted box hedge gardens. The house is of mid Georgian appearance with a five bay, two storey entrance front and a central fanlit doorway. The garden front has two large bows, each comprising three bays, decorated with a string course. These bows are adjoined by another three bays to the west. There is also a Victorian extension to the rear overlooking the walled garden. The house had many Victorian additions , including a large castellated porch which under restoration has been removed to return the house to its Georgian elegance. Another feature of this property is a large tumulus."

Ileclash House, which at times was known as Licklash and Rock Ville, was built about 1830 and is situated about 200m from the ruin of the historically interesting Licklash Castle (not included). Over the years Ileclash has had many colourful and historically interesting owners, none more so than Sir Oswald Mosley whose love life was nearly as intriguing as his political and his wife Diana, one of the famous Mitford sisters.

When acquired by the current owners, Ileclash House and grounds, although not totally neglected, were in need of substantial upgrading and modernisation. Over a 4 year period under the supervision of noted conservation architects
Frank Murphy and Partners, the property was transformed, through considerable expenditure and attention to detail seldom seen, to what is now an exceptional property.

The grounds are an outstanding feature of Ileclash, with an abundance of mature timber, terraced lawns interspersed with walkways and manicured box hedging. The delightful walled garden with spacious sun terrace and carefully tended box hedging, shrubberies and flower beds is accessed directly from the conservatory. There are a number of rare
Irish Red Squirrels resident in the garden along with various native Irish song birds.

A series of stone steps flanked by flowering plants and shrubs lead from the terraced lawns down to the tranquillity of the riverbank garden. There are a number of natural limestone features, such as rocky outcrops and caves along the riverbank. There are fishing rights adjoining this part of the property, part double bank including the Island, but mainly single bank over the prized Blackwater River. The second walk way leads up from the river through a sheltered glade of the mature woodland back to the main avenue, passing
another cave with natural water feature.

One of Ireland's finest country houses and 2 adjoining guest cottages. the property has been restored to the highest quality and in a superb elevated garden setting with frontage to and fishing rights over the River Blackwater. About 30 minutes from Cork city and airport.
