Property Description
Dating from 1790, Glenmore House is a classic Georgian three-storey country house. It combines elegantformality with all the ingredients needed for relaxed family living.
Perfectly private on its own extensive grounds, it is also within convenient reach of Crossmolina, the larger towns at Ballina, Westport and Castlebar, and is just an hour from Knock Airport.

A key part of local history and society, Glenmore has been beautifully maintained by its owners, each generation taking care of the house to hand on to the next. Described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as an important component of the domestic built heritage of County Mayo, it is listed as having a high quality of workmanship and artistic composition.

In practice, this means it is of the classic symmetrical design, so beloved of the Georgians, with elegant high-ceilinged reception rooms, and the later addition of a spacious kitchen on the ground floor. There is also a generous and beautiful conservatory, bringing the gardens into the house in such a way as to enable you to enjoy the tranquil views and sense of peace, all year round.

Further upgrades since the very early days have added en-suites to all the upper bedrooms, and installed a games room at garden level. Marrying graceful formality with cosy family spaces, and enjoying a wealth of original features and an idyllic setting, Glenmore retains its sense of timelessness, while providing everything you could want in terms of classic contemporary comforts.

Glenmore was built in 1790 with stone quarried from the nearby woodlands. It was owned by William Knox Orme until the house and lands were purchased by Godfrey Fetherstonehaugh in 1853. In a way, this kept Glenmore in the family as Fetherstonehaugh s mother had been one of the Ormes. During this time, fourteen men, three housemaids and a cook looked after the house, on an average wage of 5 pennies per day.
The land commission reassigned various acreages of Glenmore s original holdings, although the house still retains approximately 165 acres. These include woodlands, which have been added to by the current owners, who planted more than 20,000 native trees (mainly oak) over 10 hectares in 2009.
The next owner after the Featherstonehaughs, Major Robert Aldridge and his wife Constance kept the house until he moved to nearby Mount Falcon Estate in 1932. With a great interest in local history, he collected stories for the Folklore Commission. Subsequent owners maintained the role of the house in the community, and within Ireland.

Glenmore House
Opening to the ground floor, Glenmore s gracious hallway includes a fan-lit door, moulded plasterwork and ceiling rose, and a beautiful curving staircase, sweeping to the upper level. To the right is a charming dual aspect study, and beyond this an elegant dining room.

To the left, a wood-panelled music room leads to a lovely light-filled drawing room, which in turn opens to the very spacious conservatory. This has decorative metal work, an irrigated planting bed, vaulted curvilinear glass roof and Liscannor stone flagged floor. At the rear of the house, a dual aspect country-style kitchen / breakfast room includes wood-topped units and an Aga.

At garden level there is a very large games room, wine cellar, family room with vaulted brickwork ceiling, and a laundry. There is also a fifth bedroom and bathroom, giving useful options for a self-contained apartment here.

The principal four bedrooms are all on the upper floor. All are en-suite, all are very generous doubles, and the master also has a dressing room. Throughout the house, everything has been beautifully maintained, including the sash windows, working shutters, fireplaces and mantelpieces, plasterwork and architraves.

Gardens and Grounds
Set on c.165 acres, Glenmore is a haven and sanctuary for wildlife including woodcock and deer. Currently home to a herd of highland cattle, there is also ample grazing for horses and ponies, with fifteen stables in two yards adjacent to the house.

A gate lodge welcomes you to the estate, and the current owners have restored the winding avenue, which leads to the front of the house, over a little bridge crossing a gentle stream. The house itself is surrounded by patios and lawns, which give on to sheltering mature trees and in turn to woodlands, forestry, and pasturelands. There is also an historic walled garden, as old as the house itself. This structure has been well maintained, and awaits a new owner to create the gardens within.

The yards themselves also include a staff cottage, garage, additional storage sheds, a barn and a workshop. There is a turnout, and a larger arena adjacent to the yards. Access to the fields and lands is via well-maintained estate roads and tracks, and there are also walking routes throughout the grounds.

Within easy reach of some of north Mayo s gorgeous scenic beauty spots, including Downpatrick Head, C ide Fields, Lacken Strand and the Nephin Mountains, Glenmore House is convenient to all amenities. There are world-famous links golf courses at Enniscrone and Carne, while nearby Mount Falcon and Belleek Castle offer spa options as well as fine dining.

The nearest village, Crossmolina is ten minutes away, and has a choice of schools, a library, shops, bars and caf s and a lovely restaurant at Enniscoe House on the shores of Lough Conn. Ballina, President Joe Biden s ancestral home, is close at hand, with more schools and shops, and further excellent dining including at The Ice House and The Poacher.
