The family’s connection to the River Suir runs deep. Three of Peggy’s brothers were salmon fishermen, and one of their ancestors who also lived on this property, John Burns. John sadly perished during the First World War aboard the SS Formby, which was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the Irish Sea in December 1917. His name is commemorated on a monument located on Quays in Waterford and on a monument close to the Tower of London.

The story is detailed in the book The Last Voyage of the Waterford Steamers by Richard McElwee, which documents the loss of both the Formby and the Coningbeg. The ships that never returned to port.
