Property Description

Impressive country house with a private situation

Description
Dollardstown House is an imposing late-Georgian residence, part of which is believed to date back to circa 1640' s and has been in the current family' s ownership for nearly 50 years as a family home and in more recent years a successful B&B has been run from the property. More information can be found on: www.dollardstown.com.

The property is well set back from an idyllic country road, surrounded by mature gardens and numerous specimen trees giving great privacy on all sides. It is approached through stone piers with cast-iron gates and over hanging mature trees, which open to an attractive sweeping driveway leading to the front of the house with ample parking.

The accommodation is laid out over three floors and is of generous and elegant proportions. The interior boasts wonderful period features including corniced ceilings with centre roses, marble fireplaces, sash and case windows, shutters, architraves and mosaic floors. The main reception rooms are bright and spacious and arranged either side of the main hall.

The first-floor accommodation is spilt into two levels. The lower level comprises three large bedrooms, with a shared bathroom, the upper first floor level comprises three further bedrooms with en-suite facilities. All bedrooms include large windows with stunning views over the mature landscape. The second floor has recently been reroofed as well as rewired and comprises four bedrooms of generous proportions.

Outbuildings
Situated to the rear of the house is a beautiful traditional stone farm building that is currently being used as storage. This building offers potential to be developed, subject to planning permission. There is a Dutch barn and ample hardstanding.

Grounds
Dollardstown comprises about 12.89 acres of mature parkland with the primary planting including 200-year-old beech and lime trees. These trees have been complemented with more recent planting of beech, oak and lime which are now between 20-30 years old. This new generation of trees will ultimately replace the original 200-year-old planting scheme. Along with this new planting, several species of interest have been planted including Persian Ironwood, Caucasian Zelkova, Spanish Chestnut, Giant Sequoia and several pine and spruce species supplemented with an under storey of cherry laurel. All of the above provide for a peaceful habitat where wildlife prospers.

There are areas of lawn and grazing paddocks.

Athy (7 km) is a designated heritage town of Ireland and a fine example of an Anglo-Norman linear settlement. Founded in the 12th century on a river crossing, Athy takes its name from a 2nd century battle fought there which resulted in the death of Ae, son of a Munster Chieftain. Thereafter the river crossing was known in Gaelic as Ath Ae (meaning the Ford of Ae), a name subsequently anglicised as Athy.

Athy is an attractive commercial town located in the south west of Kildare and one of the main growth centres in the county. It is well serviced in terms of great restaurants, hotels, pubs and excellent shopping centres. The immediate area provides all the amenities that the modern family requires.

Carlow (17 km) and Kildare (28 km) are two large neighbouring towns and they also provide further shopping and entertainment facilities including Kildare Village, a renowned luxury brand shopping destination nestled within beautiful landscaped grounds. It is one of the 11 worldwide Luxury Brand shopping destinations with 60 Luxury Brands having their sole operating stores in Ireland in the shopping village.

County Kildare is synonymous with the bloodstock industry, famous for its world-renowned stud farms and busy racing calendar. The Curragh Racecourse is considered to be one of the finest racetracks in the world. Home of The Classics, it is steeped in history and tradition where racing dates back to the 1720s.

Punchestown, home of Irish national hunt racing, and Naas racetracks are both within 39 km of the property. It is also home to The Irish National Stud together with The Japanese Gardens and St. Fiachra' s Garden.

Dollardstown House is situated in a very convenient location in County Kildare being convenient for the M9 (9 km). Athy has an excellent transportation system including a railway station (7 km), which is on the Dublin to Waterford intercity route, with on average 9 trains per day running to Dublin. There are also daily bus services to and from Dublin City.

The sporting enthusiast is well placed with a range of top-quality amenities on their doorstep including, swimming, GAA, rugby and soccer. The keen huntsman has a choice of packs, notably the Kildare Foxhounds, Laois Hunt and Carlow Hunt.

Golfing enthusiasts are well catered for locally with Kilkea Castle Golf Club (4 km) and Athy Golf Club (8 km). The lands around Dollardstown are preserved and maintained by the Ballyroe Gun Club. The club have been stocking the area with pheasant for a few decades and use Dollardstown Woods as their breeding centre.

History
Originally built in the 12th century by the D' Ullard brothers, Dollards Town Castle and much south Kildare passed to the Fitzgerald family in the 13th Century. The remodelled castle in time became known as Leinster Lodge and the Dollards Town lands were divided into several large tenant farms.

Early references to Dollardstown House itself relate to Alderman Raphael Hunt' s lease of the estate for forty pounds from the Earl of Kildare during the Irish Confederate Wars in the 1640s. At that time the house was a large Jacobean structure with two curtain walls extending towards the north, of which one still stands today.

By 1790 Dollardstown had been taken by Patrick Dunn while his brother Thomas leased the neighbouring Leinster Lodge. Patrick carried out a major redevelopment and part of the original house was replaced with the impressive Georgian building that we see today. Dunn continued to lease Dollardstown until 1903 when it was purchased by the Campbell family from Scotland - the first time in over 600 years that it wasn' t owned by the Fitzgeralds. Campbell' s sold the house and farm to the Allen family and in turn it was purchased by the Behan family in 1970. Dollardstown is surrounded by beautiful mature tress which have been around since the times of Napoleon and it is alleged that Nelson' s ship was made partly with these trees from Dollardstown House.
