THE HISTORY
Similar to most properties in Lower Patrick Street, No. 25 was built by the Colles family (c.1745). As typical of Colles style, No. 25 is a Georgian building with plenty of local limestone, marble and oak used in construction. It was leased by the Ormonde Estate until 1979 when the freehold was purchased by the Kenealy family. The 1901 census shows that it was run as a guest house by Ellen Cuddy and later leased to the Roe family who had a drapers business (where WH Good is now located), then to the Kenealy family where three generations have since lived. Permission was given to the Royal Irish Academy to erect one of their series of plaques commemorating Great Irish Engineers, to the front of the house in 2006, to honour William F. Roe who was born in No. 25 in 1904. In 1980 planning permission was granted to convert the dining room, with a door via the existing bay window, into an Art and Office Supply Shop and the business continued until 2006. The sun room to the rear of the property was added in 2000. Lower Patrick Street is a pivotal part of the Central Business District of Kilkenny, where several well established business trade such as Solicitors, Accountants, Auctioneers and retailers.
